How do I put UHF connectors onto RG-8/U coax?
I am a ham and am putting up some antennas and need to cut coax to length. I have looked for websites with this information but could not find it.You strip enought of the center conductor out to extend beyond the center pin. You strip off enough of the outer insulation to expose the shield to fit into the body and be exposed through the holes in the shell. Leave the insulation so that the connector can be screwed onto it. You don’t use the little adaptor that screws into the back for use with RG-58 or the like. The insulation of the RG-8 will screw into these threads.
Expose 1/2 inch or more of the center conductor.
Cut back an additional 5/8 inch of the outer insulation.
Cut the braid back by 1/8 from the end of the center insulation.
You should have 1/2 inch of braid expose, 1/8 inch of the center insulation past the end of the braid, 1/2 inch or more of the center conductor.
Thread the center conductor into the center pin, feed the braid into the back of the shell body. As the insulation makes contact start to screw it into the threads in the back of the shell. See that the braid is expose throught the holes in the shell body and the center conductor is near or flush to the end of the center pin. If you made it longer just trim to match the end. Solder the center conductor to the pin and the braid to the body through the holes. Be careful not to melt the center insulation too much. Don’t bend or twist the coax while it’s still hot as this will deform the insulation and cause an impedance problem. Not that a UHF conductor is constant impedance device, it’s not but don’t mess it up more than necessary.
