The Hobby of Amateur Radio

Amateur radio or ham is largely a hobby activity. The majority of thel hobby time is spent on making contact and having conversations with people in distant regions and from different cultures. Two way communications, identifying their location and station, zone, region and place is the usual custom. This is always followed by other casual communications. If the contact is made for a contest to make two way communication with as many stations or Ham Radio operators as possible, this all the information that is shared.

DX-ing and DX-peditions:
An amateur radio operator’s main hobby is to make contact with as many stations as possible from as many parts of the world as possible. DX stands for Distant Stations. The DX-ing usually is followed with the QSO. (a Q code., see below) which means “a conversation”.

DX-peditions are different in the sense that they are expeditions organized / planned solely for the purpose of making contacts with some special or rare stations and regions. Some people travel long distance just to make contact with some unrepresented region or place.

Radio Frequency scanners available now a days form the tool of great use in these attempts. The radio scanner scans for signals until a strong signal is found and so on.

QSL cards:
The Q code is a standardized collection of three-letter message encodings, all starting with the letter “Q”, initially developed for commercial radiotelegraph communication, and later adopted by other radio services, especially amateur radio. In today’s audio signal transmission age, the Q codes are not essential. but still in use and are viewed as a sort of tradition.

As a part of DX-ing and DX-peditions the Qsl Card or the proof of contact card is shared. QSL is one such Q-code that means “I acknowledge receipt”. The common practice was that the ones who made contact at a particular frequency exchange a QSL card in the mail to confirm their contact and conversations. These QSL cards can be used as a proof of their making contact and amateur operators who make contact with a certain number of other amateur radio operators in a specified time is awarded. Moreover, they are distinguished and honored since they are deemed to be efficient amateur radio operators.

Remote region contacting:
Some countries have less amateur radio operators, and making contact with these is considered special. So, when a radio amateur from these regions makes contact, other ham operators flock to make communication with this / these hams. Making contact with these less represented places has its awards and special considerations in the award programs.

Hamfests:
Social events for the ham families and friends. It’s something akin to the family oriented social fests where there are sales, exchanges, meetings and fun. Similarly, the fest is filled with selling and exchanging hams, meeting real life ham friends and fun events for a day or sometimes over few days.

Discussion groups and Nets:
Ham operators form a discussion group based on common interests other than ham or it can also be a ham related discussion group and they can form nets or networks.

If a radio hobbyist gets involved with all of these different activities, he or she is sure to never be bored. Look into some of them, and see if you would like to get involved.

Amateur Radio As A Hobby

Becoming a Ham Radio Operator

Its interesting what people choose as their hobby. Ham radio is one of them.

Once a it was a staple of Government communications, it has slowly been

relegated to use by amateur enthusiasts.

No one knows who first coined the term Ham radio but it’s beginnings no doubt

were influenced by its military uses. Messages can be transmitted in several

forms but Morse code has to be one of the more well known.

A perfect example of this is sending a SOS signal. This call for help is

universally understood world wide. In emergencies ham radio operators can help

relaying a SOS messages where newer forms of communications like cell phones

don’t work

You’d be surprised how diverse the back grounds of Ham radio enthusiasts are

given the overall number world wide. It’s a tight nit group of individuals

sharing a common interest.

Any one with a passion to communicate to someone unknown in a far away place can

find refuge as a Ham radio operator. Local radio clubs are filled with men and

women and of every background, age and occupation.

There is a program called Amateur Radio on the International Space Station or

ARISS for short. Astronauts have actually spoken with other operators on Earth

while in orbit aboard the space station

To operate a Ham radio you must acquire a FCC License. Operating without out a

license can result in a fine. At present, there are 35 questions given for the

Technician Class exam. You have to get 26 questions correct to pass.

If you are interested in more information you can find an abundant source of

information and tutorials via the internet. Also another good source of

information is your local club. There you will find other enthusiasts to share

your passion and help you pass your exam

Once you pass you can then apply for your call sign from the FCC.

Becoming A Ham Radio Hobbyist

Becoming A Ham Radio Hobbyist

Ham Radio – Passion for Communication

Ham radio has a long and important history. As society and technology continue to move on to new things, a small segment continues to enjoy the hobby as well as to educate and help during disasters.

WHAT IS HAM RADIO?

Ham radio is the the term coined for amateur radio enthusiasts who learn to operate radios as a hobby or for practical use. Hams – as operators are called – can use various methods for transmitting messages including Morse code via telegraph, voice transmission via radio or messages through a computer. New methods of transmitting television allow for images to be received around the world by hams. Some hams have contributed to the development of new technologies for other uses.

The term ‘ham’ has unknown origin although there are several theories.

WHO USES HAM RADIO?

Ham radio operators can be anyone – doctors, homemakers, truck drivers – who enjoys communicating with new friends. Hams can talk across town or around the world.

Ham radio was used by the military in the World Wars and by ships. The well known ‘SOS’ is just one of the codes that operators use to relay messages to one another.

In emergencies ham radio operators volunteer to assist with transmitting messages when normal communications are unavailable.

So far, we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about ham radio. You may decide that the following information is even more interesting.

Hams are all over the world – even in space! While in orbit or on the space station astronauts have spoken with other operators as well as children, teachers and parents. The program is called ARISS, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station.

Hams are young and old, men and women and of every background and occupation.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO START?

In the United States you must obtain a license from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission).

To be licensed by the FCC you must pass an exam. The exam is administered by a volunteer ham operator and you are then mailed your license. You can often find websites or groups where you can locate a tutor who will answer questions or offer instruction before you take your exam. One such resource is the ARRL website. The ARRL is the National Association for Amateur Radio and provides training and resources for getting started as well as updates and news for the ham radio community.

HOW MANY HAMS ARE THERE?

The ARRL site claims over 170,000 members. FCC licenses have been issued to over 600,000 individuals in the United States and there are over 3,000,000 hams in Japan and many more throughout the world according to statistics found at ah0a-Site.

With so many people to talk to, there are even competitions to see how far away you can transmit and many other events within the community.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you’ll be glad you took the time to learn more about ham radio.

Ham Radio Collectors – How to find what your searching for

Ham Radio and Antique Radio Collectors are growing in numbers. The old radios from years ago become more valuable with age and the selection is getting smaller and smaller.

Collecting Ham Radio Equipment is much like collection old cars. Remember the first car you had and how you wish you could have another one just like it now?   The same goes for Shortwave Radio’s.  Many Hams when they started in radio back in the 60′s are now trying to rebuild their first stations.

Visiting Hamfests and Flea Markets is a good source for these old or  as a Ham would call it, Boatanchor Radios” meaning heavy and tube type receivers and transmitters.  Lots of people shop and search on ebay looking for the best bargin however you need to be careful with what you buy on ebay.  Many sellers will sell things knowing they are not working  so be ready to do a little repair work if you want to get some of them working.   An easy and fast way to search for Used ham Radio  is at www.hamradiofinder.com    they have made it simple and easy to search for equipment.  there are also many Ham Radio Classified sites on the internet and usually have new ads being posted everyday. My favorite site is www.hamkey.com because you can  list what your searching for on their site and when someone lists what your seeking, their system will send you email within seconds of the item being listed.  Its always nice to be the first one to respond to an ad for a very rare piece of equipment.  I can’t tell you how many times I have called on ads and were told it was sold just before I called. How I wish I was the first one to know it was posted.

No matter what your looking for you are sure to find it in todays worlds of  ebay, online classified ads and all the flea markets operating around the country.

Have fun in your search for that old radio you used to operate.

About the Author

I have been a Ham Operator since 1963.  Collecting the old radios that I always  dreamed of when I was young but could not afford, I am now paying sometimes twice the price of what the radio sold for new just to have a piece of my personal history. Now I play with my radios, make some money on my internet sites and end up spending the money on more radios. What an enjoyable life in my old age

Used Ham Radio – How to Buy or Sell on Ebay, Hamfests or Online

You can make money buying and selling Ham Radios on ebay and other classified sites available ion the internet.

When buying on ebay its is very important that you know the value of the equipment your buying and most of all you need to know what you can sell it for.  Usually buyers and sellers are ham Radio Operators with some experience.  I do not recomend trying to make money if your not experienced in this field.

Most important you need to be sure that the radio your buying is operational.  Some ebay sellers will sell you a piece of junk and tell you it operated fine.  If you can email the seller and ask some questions, gain more pictures or have a chance to talk to the seller on the phone, that will help you in deciding if the radio works or not.   There is also a market for non-working radios so  your not totally out of luck if you get a radio that needs work.  Many Hams would be happy to buy a non-working radio at a good reduced price and fix it himself.

Ebay is not the only place you can resell the radios you buy.  You can list on classified sites like www.hamkey.com which offers Free ads and has a large readership.  Craiglist and other local ads sites are also a good source for buying and selling.   I have personally picked up some really good deals on Craiglist and resold at a large profit.  People that list on these sites usually do not know the real value of the units so you can usually get some really good deals but be sure to check these sites daily because the good deals will go fast.

Amateur Radio is a fun hobby and many Hams like to collect the old tube radio transmitters and receivers.  You will find that this old equipment will bring high prices.  Someone is always looking for the radio they had when they first started and will pay almost anything to get another one.

Hamfests or Ham Conventions are fun places to buy and sell.  Usually held on weekends, they are well worth visiting.   The Dayton Hamvention is one of the largest and held in Dayton Ohio every may.  Over 23,000 Hams were there this past year for the weekend event.  Visiting the ARRL Website will also give you valuable information on which Hamfest are in your area and the dates.
