An amateur radio is called a Ham radio, and the operator is known as an amateur radio operator. They practice the ham radio operation as a hobby, and it is a very popular hobby at that.

The origin of the word “ham” for an amateur radio operator is somewhat fascinating. “Ham” was used to imply anyone who was Not necessarily efficient or gifted in the area. So, one does not need to depend on relay anymore but can practically connect to half way across the world as opposed to the initial days.
